Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R) is strongly considering mounting a November write-in campaign to keep her Senate seat that she recently lost claim to in the Alaska primary. Running as a write-in candidate has become the senator’s only option as her prospects of taking the Libertarian Party nominee’s place dimmed. Should she decide on a write-in campaign, GOP sources say she would face opposition from the National Republican Senatorial Committee. The NRSC endorsed Joe Miller immediately after Sen. Murkowski conceded the primary to him, and the GOP committee has voiced its intention to back the Fairbanks attorney.
“I’m no quitter,” Sen. Murkowski told a Fairbanks newspaper reporter. “I’m weighing all my options and seeing what’s available.”
To run on the Libertarian Party line, the party would need to switch candidates by Sept. 15. However, the deadline to file a letter of intent for write-in candidates is five days before the election.
While waging a write-in campaign is a demanding task for any candidate, Sen. Murkowski’s strong name identification and fundraising abilities are seen as advantages that could help her be successful in her bid to keep her Senate seat. Others fear that Republicans are opening the door to Democrats by splitting the GOP vote among themselves in the election. They point out that, in the Senate, even one seat could mean the difference between a party having a majority of the votes, or having the ability to filibuster.
