H.Res.990 - Supporting ICE Act

The House passed (244-35) H.Res.990, a resolution to expresses the House of Representatives’ support for all United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers and personnel who carry out the important mission of ICE, denounces calls for the complete abolishment of ICE, and supports the efforts of all federal agencies, state law enforcement, and military personnel who bring law and order to our nation’s borders.

In Favor

Rep. Billy Long (R-MO):

“Abolish ICE, abolish ICE, abolish ICE!” That seems to be the rallying cry of activists, elected officials and candidates for office these days. They seriously want to abolish the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the law enforcement agency in charge of enforcing our federal laws regarding border control, customs, trade and immigration. These cheerleaders don’t seem to appreciate why ICE was created in the first place. Although it might be the flavor of the month to voice such opinions, I would rather use this space to reflect on all of ICE’s accomplishments and what would be lost if it was in fact abolished."

Rep. Tom Rice (R-SC)

"House Republicans overwhelmingly voted to show our support for ICE by passing House Resolution 990 this week. The brave men and women who serve as ICE agents put their lives on the line to keep drugs out of our communities, protect children from trafficking, and prevent gang violence. Last year, ICE agents made 76,000 drug arrests, 4,818 gang-related arrests, and stopped over 980,000 pounds of drugs at the border. Calls from the left to "abolish ICE" are reckless, radical, and irresponsible. I will always support those who protect South Carolina and our nation. "

Against

House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer:

“I'm voting present on this resolution because it's a sham and a distraction. It's an outrageous attempt to hide the continued suffering of children behind the partisans’ attack on Democrats. This is exactly that kind of gotcha vote that alienates the Americans from our government. It's shameless and it's inappropriate.

“Inappropriate because Republicans are not doing a single thing to address the crisis of children still separated from their parents even after a Court ruled that they need to be reunited.

“Democrats refuse to play Republicans' game when it comes to children's well-being and the safety of those who come here seeking asylum. We're not falling for this trap, and you can say we're doing it as much as you want. Democrats support secure borders and honor the service of all those whose lives are put at risk in protecting our country and our people. And I take a back seat to no one in this House over the years supporting our law enforcement personnel."
