Fighting to Protect Second Amendment Rights
Earlier this week, Speaker Nancy Pelosi held votes on two gun-control bills claiming these two bills will prevent gun violence, but the reality is they will make criminals out of law-abiding citizens.

I strongly opposed both Democrat gun-control bills brought forward under the guise of background checks. Republicans identified many problems and the Democrat majority shut out almost every one of our solutions. The Democrats think just saying ‘background checks’ makes this good legislation, but these bills make criminals out of law-abiding citizens.

Specifically under H.R. 8, the Background Checks Act of 2019, if you loan your gun to a friend and he wants to go to the shooting range to see if this is the right kind of gun to protect himself, which he has a right to do under the Second Amendment, that act would make you a criminal subject to a year in jail and up to a $100,000 fine. We tried to fix that problem, and Democrats shut us out.

Americans use firearms for self-defense. That is the basis of the Second Amendment. Our Founding Fathers believed every American had a right to defend themselves. Every day, on average, in this country guns are used by good people to defend themselves against bad people and H.R. 8 is going to make it harder for them to get access to these guns.

Supporting President Trump's Efforts to Secure the Border
Speaker Nancy Pelosi also brought froward a resolution to end President Trump's declaration of a national emergency at the southern border. While Speaker Pelosi and her liberal lieutenants refuse to support the money necessary to secure our border, President Trump took an oath to keep our country safe, and is using all legal tools available to protect Americans from the crime, drugs, and human trafficking that comes across our southern border every day. Speaker Pelosi’s resolution blocking the national emergency declaration is another example of her refusal to secure our border, and would leave Americans less safe. I was proud to stand with victims of illegal immigrant crime and vote against this useless and irresponsible resolution.

I spoke about the importance of securing the border at a press conference this week. Watch my remarks here

God Bless,

Steve Scalise
House Republican Whip
